Teenage murderer named after judge lifts gag

A teenage murderer and his father have been named after a judge lifted reporting restrictions following a jury conviction.

Jordan Carroll, 16, and his accomplice Karl Keatley, 20, were found guilty of murdering 43-year-old Michael Eccles near his Lichfield home in January.

Mr Eccles suffered massive facial and neck injuries as well as ten broken ribs in the attack which happened as he walked home from a shop.

Carroll had been subject to a section 39 Order under the Children and Young Persons Act 1993 which grants automatic anonymity to minors.

But the Press Association made representations to the judge at Birmingham Crown Court on Tuesday as the jury made its deliberations, Media Lawyer reports.

The lifting of restrictions meant reporters could also name Carroll’s father Edward who was convicted of perverting the course of justice for putting his son’s blood-stained clothes in the washing machine and cleaning blood from his head.

Edward Carroll’s estranged wife Sandra could also be identified as the person who told police she believed her son was involved in the attack on Mr Eccles.

PA’s letter argued that, if Jordan Carroll was convicted, he should be identified because of the seriousness of his crime and because anonymity for him also meant anonymity for his father.

Judge Robert Juckes QC passed no comment when he lifted the reporting restrictions after the jury gave its guilty verdict.

Jordan and Edward Carroll and Keatley were remanded in custody to be sentenced on 11 September.
