Reunion raises cash in memory of former reporter

A reunion held in memory of a former West Midlands journalist has raised over £200 towards a lasting monument in his name.

Around 70 friends and former colleagues of Express and Star reporter Andy Donkersley gathered in Wolverhampton on Saturday night for a tribute evening.

A total of £203.50 was collected which will be put towards a memorial to Andy, most likely a bench bearing his name in Shifnal where he used to live.

Andy died in November aged 52 and his obituary on HoldtheFrontPage received an outpouring of tributes posted underneath.

Such was the success of the evening that organiser Steve Gordos said those present decided it would most likely become an annual event for current and former staff from the E&S and parent company Midland News Association.

Steve, a former E&S sports editor, said: “It was a fine tribute to Andy, a reporter we all admired both professionally and as a friend.

“I think it will be the catalyst for future E&S reunions as everyone said how much they enjoyed meeting old pals.

“We hope the cash raised and a few more donations will enable us to have some lasting memorial to Andy.”

Well done all. Nice tribute idea. Sorry I couldn’t be there on Saturday. Put my down name down for next year, Steve.
