Reporter survives run-in with Jonny Wilkinson

Cynics bemoan the drop in journalistic nous and standards today – particularly among trainees with little experience.

So here’s a heartwarming tale of opportunism for the old-school brigade from The Northern Echo about how a trainee sports reporter beat the pack to secure an exclusive interview with England rugby star Jonny Wilkinson.

The injury-prone fly half was expected at a press conference at his club Newcastle Falcons to discuss his imminent return to first-team rugby, which The Echo’s Andy Richardson was despatched to cover.

Almost inevitably, Jonny suffered another injury setback so wasn’t available for questions in the conference.

Once done, Andy returned to his car only to be shunted from behind in the club car park by none other than Mr Wilkinson himself.

Spotting a golden opportunity, Andy explained who he was and asked for an exclusive chat in exchange for the prang to stay between the two of them…..

In the way that they don’t go through insurance companies.
How is it “all over” HoldtheFrontPage exactly?

Point taken Beth. I misread the story as meaning no publicity about the crash in exchange for an interview.
