Dan Slingsby was named the best regional games columnist at the Games Media Awards in London.

Dan’s ‘Games Addict’ is a weekly syndicated column that appears in 16 local newspapers in the UK.

The other shortlisted candidates were Ross Wilkinson from the Press Association, Steven Fox from the Metro, Ian Crump from Southampton-based daily the Southern Daily Echo and last year’s winner Dave Cook, from The Scotsman.

Sub-editor Steve Madgwick has been appointed deputy editor of Archant London title The Docklands.

Steve takes over from James Buttery who left in September to develop his consultancy business in the West Country. He has been on The Docklands for the past two years.

Group editor Malcolm Starbrook said: “Steve has done a great job on the paper and I am certain that his skills and talents will help us strengthen and develop The Docklands title still further in the coming months.”

Mr Justice Eady will be a keynote speaker at a conference on privacy law.

The event, entitled ‘Free Speech v Privacy – What is the legal balance now?’, is being held in London on 1 December.

Mr Justice Eady is seen as one of the foremost architects in the developments of privacy law and rulings.

Other topics on the agenda include preventing publication of private information, restricting so-called hate speech and libel tourism.

The Liverpool Echo has appointed a new writer to cover Liverpool FC.

Dominic King is the Echo’s former Everton FC reporter and takes over from Tony Barrett who has now joined The Times.

The 2010 World Press Photo competition will soon be open for entries.

Photographers will have between 1 December and 14 January to submit their shots for consideration by the judges.

Prizes are divided up between ten categories: spot news, general news, people in the news, sports action, sports features, contemporary issues, daily life, arts and entertainment, portraits and nature.

First-prize winners in each category will receive a cash prize of €1,500 while the overall winner of World Press Photo of the Year will receive €10,000.
