Readers force U-turn over planning lists

A South West council could begin placing planning applications in the local press again, after pressure from local residents and newspaper readers.

Cornwall’s new unitary authority cabinet has said it will look into reinstating the notices after residents complained they didn’t know what was happening in their communities.

Letters pages in local papers received numerous communications calling for the lists to be brought back, reports thisiscornwall.co.uk.

Prior to Cornwall’s Council launch in April, the county’s district authorities would publish weekly lists of planning applications in local newspapers.

But the new unitary body decided it would only publicise the major applications in the press, meaning vital advertising revenue was lost to publishers.

Following a change of control from Lib-Dem to Tory, the authority is expected to place around 30 planning applications in local Cornwall and Devon Media titles each week instead of 20.

This latest move follows the council’s decision last month to scrap its ‘Your Cornwall’ monthly newsletter just 11 months after its inception.

Why can’t the residents just go and get the information from the council’s offices?

Because many of them want to sit down with a traditional newspaper and read planning applications that may be of interest to them. Simple, surely?

Oh lord, Journo. Talk about a turkey voting for Christmas.
