Press campaign to end six-year murder mystery

A six-year hunt to find a postman’s killer could be ended with the help of a North Wales daily newspaper.

The Evening Leader has teamed up with North Wales Police detectives to launch ‘Justice for Paul’ in the hope that the mystery of 30-year-old Paul Savage’s death can finally be solved.

A £100,000 reward is also being offered by police as part of the investigation for any information that leads to the prosecution of Mr Savage’s killers.

In a special campaign launch message, the Evening Leader calls the murder a “brutal stain on the recent history of Flintshire”.

Mr Savage was attacked and beaten while delivering letters on the morning of 4 February 2003 in Mold. He died later the same day at Wrexham Maelor Hospital and no-one has ever been charged with his murder.

Over the coming weeks the Evening Leader will be profiling the work being undertaken by officers to find the clues which will hopefully lead to the arrest of Paul’s killer.

Chief reporter (newsdesk) Steve Graves said: “The police approached us about the campaign. They feel that, given we have such a local presence in the area, this is the way to encourage people to go to a trusted body which isn’t the police.

“They can give us information which we can pass on to the police. It’s the only unsolved murder in Mold itself.

“It’s normally a really safe place – nothing like this ever happens here and it’s probably the biggest story of the last decade. It’s still hanging over us.

“We were delighted to offer all the support we can to the police in the hunt for Paul’s killer.

“Over the past six years the paper has followed the story closely, and it’s come to be something of a personal crusade for our reporter Kate Forrester.

“She’s worked closely with Paul’s mum and the police in the past, but we hope this new way of approaching the story will turn up new information and make a real difference to the investigation.”

Associate editor Martin Wright added: “We’re very pleased to be offering our support to the police in this matter.

“It’s something a bit different for the Evening Leader but we hope that by harnessing the power of the press we can help bring Paul’s killers to justice.

“We’re hoping for a good response to the appeal and we’re all looking forward to working closely with the police in their investigation.”

Det Sgt Kevin Challinor said: “Mold is my home town and I take the investigation of this killing personally. I feel that the people of Mold should take it personally too.

“The North Wales Police major incident team will provide all the support possible for this very worthwhile campaign.

“We are not just determined to solve this case. We are truly hopeful and positive that we will really get somewhere.”
