Record entries for Scottish photography awards

Record entries have been submitted to an annual awards scheme celebrating the best in Scottish press photography.

Judges had to plough through more than 3,100 images from students, staffers and freelancers for this year’s First ScotRail Press Photography Awards.

Fourteen prizes are up for grabs with an option for the panel to also present a lifetime achievement award.

The student photographer of the year category attracted double the number of entries compared to last year while a further six sections saw a huge spike in submissions, say organisers.

The winner of the open category, which attracted almost 300 entries, will be picked by the general public who can vote online from 1 March with the full shortlist revealed the following day.

Individual categories carry a cash prize of at least £250 with the top category of photographer of the year earning £1,000.

The awards ceremony takes place on 26 March at Mitchell Library, Glasgow – click here to see last year’s list of winners.
