A college lecturer responsible for launching hundreds of photography careers within the media has been shortlisted for a learning award.

Paul Delmar, lecturer at Sheffield’s Norton College for 29 years, is a finalist in the Celebration of Learning and Skills Awards 2009 which recognises achievements of staff, students and employers across Yorkshire and the Humber.

He is shortlisted in the chair’s award for personal achievement in learning. Paul, below, estimates that he has taught over a thousand students at Norton, the only college in the UK to run a press photography and photojournalism course accredited by the National Council for the Training of Journalists.

Paul (below) said: “Students are highly motivated, love learning and enjoy a high job success rate. They are testament to the course’s success.”

College principal Heather MacDonald said Paul was an excellent ambassador who had shows exceptional commitment to students’ development.

The winners across ten categories will be announced in Harrogate on Thursday.

I hope Paul wins the award – it will be very well deserved. He is responsible for training press photographers to a very high standard for years.

We might have had our occasional disagreements but I wouldn’t be where I am today without his guidance and ‘tough love’! Fantastic tutor and credit to the college.
