A quick-thinking thief stole £2,000 from a Leicestershire Police station – after officers had seized the cash from another suspect. This howler, along with other thefts from the force, came to light after the Leicester Mercury submitted a Freedom of Information request.

The Mercury’s report also showed that, between November 2007 and October 2008, a car battery, a bicycle, money and cigarettes worth £7, a £60 tape recorder, a parcel containing a baseball cap and a charity box containing DVDs worth £14 were taken from various stations.

The News of the World is now taking entries for its graduate scholarship scheme – renamed in honour of long-serving journalist Robert Warren who died earlier this month.

It lasts for two years from September and trainees will work in every department of the Sunday paper.

Applicants must have a university degree, or equivalent qualification, or be in the final year of a degree course.

The scheme is run in conjunction with Harlow College, in Essex, during which graduates will receive a salary and their tuition fees on the college’s 19-week course will be paid.

Deadline for applications is 8 May – visit newsoftheworld.co.uk for more information and to apply.
