Newspapers team up to send sick kids to Santa

Three regional dailies are campaigning to send sick and terminally-ill children on a winter wonderland trip to Lapland.

Every year the charity When You Wish Upon A Star flies to the North Pole so children can meet Santa in what could be their last Christmas.

But for the first time in its 14-year history, the trip is under threat because the charity cannot afford to pay for it, potentially crushing the dreams of over 200 children from the East Yorkshire and North Lincs area.

Now the Scunthorpe Telegraph, Hull Daily Mail and Grimsby Telegraph are all appealing to their readers to dig deep and raise funds so the flight can go ahead on 10 December.

The Grimsby Telegraph launched its appeal (above) with a graphic of an empty plane, which it will fill in every time £300 is collected – the cost of sending one child on the trip.

Staff at the Grimsby office have already collected £300 which was matched by parent company Northcliffe, meaning two children can go to Lapland.

Meanwhile, the Scunthorpe Telegraph reports how three youngsters on its patch held pamper parties whereby cash was donated in exchange for treatments such as scalp massages.

The three titles have previously joined forces for a campaign when they launched a battle to scrap toll charges on the Humber Bridge.
