Newspaper print workers strike action averted

Planned strike action by Trinity Mirror print workers has been cancelled.

Earlier this month members of the Unite union at TM’s 12 UK printing plants voted in favour of action short of striking.

But scheduled action for last Saturday was averted after the union said it was given assurances by the publisher over local bargaining.

A Trinity Mirror spokesman said: “We are pleased that the majority of members have agreed not to pursue industrial action.

“Throughout this process all we have done is confirm what has always been our position on local bargaining and on a potential bonus in 2009, and we can now concentrate our efforts on steering the business through some of the most challenging trading conditions the industry has ever faced.”

All printing sites except for Oldham have agreed terms with Trinity Mirror so action could still take place there.

The initial strike ballot was held in August following the company’s announcement of a pay freeze last November.
