New editor appointed for Midlands weekly

A weekly editor is swapping West Wales for the the English-Welsh borders as she takes up a new role.

Fiona Phillips, editor of the Western Telegraph for the past seven years, is to become editor of the Hereford Times this month. Both titles are owned by Newsquest.

The move marks a significant departure for Fiona who has served in almost every editorial role on the Western Telegraph since first joining the paper as a trainee reporter in 1980.

She left to edit the newly-launched Swansea Gazette and was also chief courts reporter for a leading news agency before returning there as editor in 2002.

The Hereford Times editorship has been vacant since September when Liz Griffin moved to a special projects role within Newsquest.

Deputy editor David Edwards had been acting editor pending a permanent appointment.
