The biggest-selling regional newspaper in the UK has been accused of “gutter journalism” by one of its local MPs.

The Wolverhampton-based Express and Star came under fire from Stourbridge MP Lynda Waltho over a report it carried regarding the MPs’ expenses row.

The Daily Telegraph initially reported Mrs Waltho had made various claims for food, London housing costs, bed linen and electrical equipment.

This was followed up by the Express and Star which, according to Mrs Waltho, accused her of being “dragged into” the row.

In a barbed statement aimed at both papers, she wrote: “I am disappointed also that the Express and Star chose to report my case with such emotive language and to refer to ‘being dragged into expenses row’ or ‘allegations’ is quite frankly the worst sort of gutter journalism.

“There are no allegations made against me and to suggest so is downright insulting.

“Indeed anybody who looks at my allowances will see that my claims are rather modest.”

She added: “I have not avoided tax payments, double claimed on homes or ‘flipped’ my residence nor have I sought to profit in any other way other than receive my salary.

“My children attend local state schools and colleges and our life is and will remain in Stourbridge. I truly believe that I have acted well within the letter and the spirit of the rules.”

The Express and Star had not responded to a request for comment at the time of publication.

Unfortunately the E&S has been attempting to be the Daily Mail with a Black Country accent for some years. At the end of the day, we get the politicians we deserve.
