Hugh Grant backs paper's £200,000 charity mission

Hollywood movie star Hugh Grant has backed a Bolton News campaign to raise £200,000 in a year for a cancer charity.

The actor was in the north-west town to meet Marie Curie nurses as part of the appeal which hopes to double the number of caring hours the charity provides.

Grant’s mother died of pancreatic cancer in 2001 and he is an ambassador for Marie Curie which cares for cancer patients in their own homes.


Printing of the Liverpool Daily Post and Echo has moved out of the north-west city after 154 years.

Weekday editions of the Trinity Mirror titles began publication in Oldham this week.

The Echo still has same day editions with one overnight printing of one edition due to start in October.

The company announced the plans in September as part of a wider editorial and production restructure in its North West division.


The National Union of Journalists is planning a demonstration on behalf of freelance photographers outside the Guardian’s London offices next month.

The protest on 1 September is in response to claims that Guardian News and Media will no longer pay for re-use of pictures commissioned after that date.


A news agency is being set up on the small island of Tiree, off the west coast of Scotland.

Ian Sharp used to run the Glasgow Court Agency and also worked for the Daily Express and The Herald.

He has had a holiday home on the island, which has a population of just under 800, for 25 years. Ian lives there permanently now after having lung removed last year due to long cancer, allmediascotland reports.


A journalism student who recently set up his own website has dedicated it to the memory of Simon Meeks, former deputy sports editor at Sheffield daily The Star.

Danny Hall met Simon, who died last month after battling cancer for seven months, while doing temporary work at the paper.

Danny is currently studying for a journalism degree at Sheffield Hallam University.
