Former sports editor dies aged 78

The former sports editor of the Sheffield Morning Telegraph has died.

David Jones was a well-known figure in Sheffield and South Yorkshire and combined his role on the paper with that of sports editor on Radio Sheffield during the 1960s and 70s.

Among his peers on the Telegraph was now legendary BBC football commentator John Motson.

David later joined Tyne Tees Television as a producer and he also covered rugby league matches.

Away from the newsroom David was a qualified football referee and helped to write a biography of referee Jack Taylor who famously awarded two penalties in the first 30 minutes of the 1974 World Cup Final.

David also contributed to books about Leeds United players Billy Bremner and Allan Clarke and show jumper Harvey Smith. He died aged 78 at his home in North Shields.
