Football special scrapped ahead of new season

Archant Norfolk’s Saturday paper the Pink ‘Un has become the latest regional press sporting supplement to fall victim to the trend towards online results services.

The Pink ‘Un is published on Saturday evenings and contains all the day’s football results and reports from the region’s main teams such as Norwich City FC.

However Archant says resources and efforts will now be concentrated on the paper’s sister website pinkun.com in what it is calling a “hugely exciting time” for the sportsdesk.

Instead a 12-page printed version of the title will be available every Monday in the Eastern Daily Press covering Norwich City, the Premier League and all local football.

Last season Archant Suffolk scrapped its Green ‘Un print product to concentrate on its sister website but the Ipswich-based Evening Star continues to carry a Green ‘Un section.

And in June it emerged that the Express and Star was dropping its Sporting Star publication covering West Midlands football.

The revamped Pink ‘Un website offers an interactive service from all Norwich City matches giving fans live coverage and the chance to chat with reporters at games.

Pre- and post-match podcasts will be produced and writer Chris Lakey will continue making video reports covering Norwich City.

Head of sport Richard Willner said: “This is a hugely exciting time for the sportsdesk. We are creating new ways of following football and our new live, interactive service is already proving popular.

“We’ve tried it out at some of the pre-season friendlies and the numbers involved are staggering. I can only see this service going from strength to strength.

“We want to encourage as many local teams to send us their club information, match reports and news.

“The Pink ‘Un has been a part of people’s lives for many years and it is time to take the next step in its evolution.”

When I was a regular at Carrow Road the Pink ‘Un was on sale in the city centre by the time you had got out of the ground and walked up the hill. Nearly as quick then in print as they will be with the web.
