Digital editors to get lessons from America

Internet lessons from across the pond will feature in the next meeting of the Digital Editors’ Network.

Eric Ulkin, former online editor of the LA Times, will be discussing building the LA Times datadesk and alternative forms of story building.

The free event, organised by the University of Central Lancashire and DEN, will start with the annual Harris Lecture given by Mark Skipworth, executive editor of the Daily and Sunday Telegraph.

The day will also include a presentation about digital archives from former editor Patrick Fleming who is now leading projects for the British Library in this field.

Other guest speakers include BBC business editor Robert Peston and Guardian blog editor Kevin Anderson who will discuss lessons learned from the social media coverage of the UK presidential election.

The afternoon will conclude with a networking reception hosted by the Journalism Leaders Forum followed by a panel discussion: ‘Reviewing the bottom line: the journalism of economics and the economics of journalism’.

The panel will be chaired by Kevin Anderson and include Robert Peston, FT.com interactive editor Kate McKenzie, Crain’s Manchester Business publisher Arthur Porter and Chris Barry, editor of TheBusinessDesk.com.

The discussion will be webcast live at the journalismleadersforum site.

Event organiser Nick Turner said: “The current economic pressures on newspapers and media organisations can make it hard to find time to spend at events like this but I believe that we have a line up that will more than justify people’s time away from the coalface.

“Attendees at Digital Editors’ Network events will not just hear from some excellent speakers but get the chance to develop useful contacts around the industry working in similar jobs who are keen to share tips.”

  • The event is being held at the University of Central Lancashire, Preston, from 1pm on Tuesday – e-mail [email protected] for more information.
