Jon Colman from Cumbrian Newspapers has been named the nation’s top regional sports writer.

The Carlisle based writer took the award at last night’s Sports Journalists’ Association annual prize giving in London – he was highly commended in the same category last year.

And it was a double celebration for Cumbrian Newspapers as his colleague Amanda Little was commended in the same category.

Also featuring from the regional press was Dan Matthams, from the Nottingham Evening Post, who was commended in the young sports photographer, with Getty Images staffers Paul Gilham taking the prize and Julian Finney also commended.

The majority of prize winners came from the national press and media and news agencies.
