Battle for city's business readers hots up again

The battle for business readers in Manchester is intensifying after the Manchester Evening News launched a daily email newsletter for the business community.

Over the past year the daily paper has seen two potential rivals move onto its patch in the shape of Crain’s Manchester Business and the BusinessDesk.com.

Now it has launched a daily ‘Business Update’ which will be sent to registered subscribers on weekdays at 5pm.

The email bulletin will contain a digest of that day’s business news, including stock market closing prices and major share moves as well as regional stories.

MEN business editor Kevin Feddy said: “The MEN continues to deliver unrivalled business coverage every day, both on and offline, but we are aware that people are increasingly pressed for time and don’t have chance to read every word.

“We also often receive late news and announcements which we can’t always accommodate in print but would also be ‘old news’ if they appeared in the paper some 36 hours later or even online the next morning.

“So we have now decided to introduce a Manchester news round-up which will include a selection of the day’s most important business stories and breaking news, stock market closing prices and major share movers as well as a taster about the agenda setting articles to be included in the next day’s newspaper and online.”

The email bulletin will include links to more in-depth reports on the MEN website and will be optimised to work for business people on the move using Blackberries, iPhones or other web-enabled mobile devices.

Am I missing something? Mt Feddy says “would also be ‘old news’ if they appeared in the paper some 36 hours later or even online the next morning. ” Is there something preventing news being published online that very minute? Why would there be a delay until the following morning?
