Roving reporter films his own marathon effort

A reporter went the extra 13 miles for his newspaper’s readers when filmed himself running a half marathon.

Mike Pyle, from the Bracknell Forest Standard, used his company’s only ‘Flip’ camera – like a mobile phone camera – to record his exertions at the town’s half marathon.

The resulting film has been posted on the Standard’s website as Mike attempts to share with viewers the pleasure and pain of completing his first half marathon.

Mike, (24), said: “It was about three or four months ago that we had the idea to run it and then a couple of days before the race that I thought about the camera.

“It was pretty uncomfortable. The cameras are about the size of a big mobile phone and I had its pouch strapped to my arm through the race.

“Every few miles, I talked to the camera and people started laughing at me.

“They could just hear this guy talking to himself, saying how far he had got.”

Mike finished the race in 2h 21m and admitted that prior to editing, his video contained “a lot of wheezing”.

However, he refused to rule out doing something similar in the future, despite eight miles being the furthest he’d run before race day.

He was joined by two other reporters from the Standard and three from sister title the Reading Evening Post and his video can be seen at the Standard’s website.
