Romeo reporter enjoys Valentine's date to raise cancer charity cash

Love could be in the air for a reporter who was put up for a Valentine’s Day auction by his bosses.

Readers of the Maidenhead Advertiser were offered the chance of a date with 23-year-old Nick Meakin in exchange for the highest donation to a local cancer charity looking to build a hospice.

Jo Yates, a 24-year-old teaching assistant, bid a staggering £350 for a night with Nick after her mother said she’d let her off a month’s rent.

Nick believes that huge amount may have put off other potential suitors as Jo was the only bidder.

But Berkshire’s answer to Don Juan DeMarco says the date went very well.

He said: “It was actually a nice evening. I must admit to being a bit dubious about it before.

“But we had a few things in common, she’s a pretty clever girl and we got on.”

So will they be hooking up again now the pressures off from the Valentine’s Day auction?

“This really is the big question which everyone keeps asking,” Nick said.

“Watch this space. I will probably have a drink with her in the next few weeks.”

He added: “I was completely blown away by the £350. I thought that was a massive amount of money.

“I had a phone call and an e-mail from the charity’s campaign manager, saying she is very grateful which is always nice.

“It makes it seem worthwhile. Hopefully a few of my colleagues will be auctioned now. We could be come known as the auctioning paper.”
