Additional Skills
During my time at university, as well as being a regular contributor to the university newspaper Northumbria Student, I developed a number of research skills including extensive use of the Internet, and computer literacy as well as public speaking. I was also involved in the formation of a university history society. My role was booking visiting public speakers, through my contacts in the academic world
My research skills led to a substantial 10,000 word dissertation on the anti war movement, and the Vietnam War, for which I built up a number of contacts with Vietnam veterans. I also designed a database program on the English Civil War, and the Putney Debates of 1647. In addition I also undertook a period of work experience, in which I designed a teaching pack for use in schools on the Border Reivers. I have also researched, written and presented a paper on the Border Reivers at the 3rd Public History Conference organized by Ruskin College Oxford in May 2002.
In the summer of 2006, I wrote, edited and published a pamphlet on the 90 anniversary of the battle of the Somme, and its effects on the rural communities of Northumberland. This was displayed throughout libraries in Northumberland, and reflected my long standing interest in WW1
Interests
I have a keen interest in football and follow my supported team all over the UK to watch matches. I also do a lot of reading in my spare time and have a keen interest in History, which has influenced some of my writing. At present I am researching the educational culture of the South Wales Miners in preparation for my forthcoming M.A dissertation
