Press photographer turns hand to film-making

A weekly press photographer has enjoyed his own first movie premiere after making his first foray into film making.

Steve Lewis, of the North Wales Weekly News, joined over 100 people at the Theatr Colwyn to enjoy the first screening of his film Fish Tail.

The 46-year-old wrote the family comedy and signed up local talent to star in the movie which tells the tale of the mistaken identity of a mermaid.

Steve said it was a proud moment and already has plans to remake Fish Tail as a full-length feature film if he can secure funding.

He told the Weekly News: “The nice thing about it was to be able to stand at the back of the theatre, watch it on the big screen and listen for the reaction of the audience.

“I was waiting for the first laugh. If that didn’t happen I would have failed, but they laughed all the way through.

“Next year I’m going to look at getting funding for a feature film.

“There are several ways of doing it – private sponsorship or the British Film Council.

“If I can re-shoot it I will do it in Colwyn Bay and keep as many of the cast as possible.”

Steve used his experiences as a newspaper photographer to inspire the content of the film which is aimed at all ages.

“When I was thinking of characters I was thinking of people I’d met, which I think is quite cool,” he added.

“I didn’t want any knives or guns in it. I wanted to make a family film and I think we’ve done that.”
