Newspaper chiefs discuss police picture guidance

Industry leaders have met with the Association of Chief Police Officers to discuss revised guidelines for releasing images of those involved in court cases to the media.

ACPO has revised its guidance note 8 which advises on the release of images of defendants and suspects.

The note’s objectives are to ensure a more uniform approach across forces, encourage the release of images where appropriate and at earliest opportunity and ensure greater openness in reporting of criminal investigations.

Respresentatives from the Society of Editors and Newspaper Society met with Nick Barker, staff officer to British Transport Police deputy chief constable Andy Trotter who is also chair of ACPO’s Media Advisory Group.

The NS said the revisions to Note 8 should see more information released to the media about individuals involved in cases rather than less.

Negotiations are still ongoing at this stage and further discussions between the Newspaper Society and ACPO are scheduled.

A final version of ACPO’s guidance is due out later this month.
