New era dawns for Birmingham newspapers

Today marks a “new beginning” for staff at three Birmingham papers after they completed their move to new out-of-town premises at Fort Dunlop.

The Birmingham Post and Mail and Sunday Mercury will now be produced from the imposing former tyre factory which overlooks the M6, five miles outside the Second City.

The Trinity Mirror trio have been housed in the heart of Birmingham for the past 150 years and in their current Printing House Street home since the 1960s.

Mail editor Steve Dyson penned a final farewell on his Editor’s Chair blog, calling it the end of an era as a “new beginning awaits”.

He said: “Some of us are feeling a little nostalgic at the years that have passed.

“In my case, the first time I tapped away at keyboards in editorial here was 18 years ago.”

The papers will occupy an entire floor at Fort Dunlop, approximately an acre in size, with the newsroom being completely redesigned to reflect its new status as a ‘multimedia hub’.

Steve added: “My desk will be alongside that of the Birmingham Post editor. In front of us will be an oval of desks seating 12 content heads – representing each department serving all newspapers and websites.

“All stories will be discussed at this hub and instant decisions made as to where they go first – the web, Mail, Post or Mercury – and in what form.

“Brand integrity will be a crucial factor, each title must be catered for. But the ‘one newsroom’ will mean less replication of decision-making, and less duplication of content unless entirely separate angles are needed.”

The rehousing is part of a wider shake-up of the titles, recently rebranded BPM Media.

In August the company announced it wanted to shed 65 editorial jobs across Birmingham, Coventry and the Midlands.

Trinity Mirror also closed some weekly titles in Derbyshire and it is thought that eventually all sub-editors on remaining weekly titles will work from either Birmingham or Coventry.

The consultation process with staff on the redundancies officially ends tomorrow.
