Journalists vote to fight North-East redundancies

Trinity Mirror journalists in Newcastle have voted overwhelmingly in favour of industrial action in a ballot over job cuts.

Management is proposing to shed 23 jobs in Newcastle and to close district offices in North Shields and Durham.

National Union of Journalists members at The Journal, Evening Chronicle, Sunday Sun and associated weeklies have voted 85pc in favour of strike action and 90pc in favour of action short of striking.

The NUJ chapel can now choose to take strike action against the proposed cuts at seven day’s notice.

NUJ northern organiser Chris Morley said: “The chapel are willing to talk about restructuring but do not want anyone to be forced out of a job.

“This ballot demonstrates the strength of feeling and gives us a mandate for action if anyone is threatened with compulsory redundancy.”

The NUJ chapel is due to meet again tomorrow. Trinity Mirror declined to comment.

John, when I read comments like yours, it makes me think that perhaps there is an argument for cutting back some of the dead wood in the industry.
