  • Owen Howell, who has completed the University of Central Lancashire’s newspaper training course, is just one of 20 young journalists invited on the Foreign Correspondents’ Programme, in Helsinki.

Owen, (25), said: “It is absolutely amazing to be given this opportunity – to stay in a new and unfamiliar place, meet new people and do something I really enjoy, which is writing about politics.

“I cannot wait to learn all about Finland’s unique culture and language and talk to political experts as well as being able to experience Helsinki.”

The programme is sponsored by the Finnish Foreign Ministry and brings together young journalists from all over the world to learn about the country.

Course leader Delwyn Swingewood said: “Owen has worked really hard and demonstrated great commitment throughout his time at UCLan.

“He thoroughly deserves the scholarship and it’s a great start to his career.”

Owen – having done this scholarship a decade ago I can promise you that you’ll have the time of your life. Enjoy the sauna, laughter and Lapin Kulta beer.
