Journal winning fight to stop 'STOOPID' drivers

A campaign to name and shame ‘STOOPID’ lorry drivers who keep crashing into low bridges is starting to see results.

The Grantham Journal launched the ‘It’s a Low Bridge Stoopid’ campaign in February after the town centre was constantly being clogged up waiting for stuck lorries to be rescued.

Now Lincolnshire County Council has given the weekly title a time scale on when it will erect much clearer signs on approach roads towards the three troublesome bridges.

Assistant editor Bob Hart said: “The county council were going to do something to improve the signs but didn’t know when they’re going to do it.

“This week they’ve told us it will be in January so it seems they responded to what we’ve been trying to do.

“We’re talking about a strike at least once a week. We’ve written to the companies responsible but they’ve all ignored us.

“Readers are still brining in pictures or ringing us to tip us off.”

To further highlight the problem the Journal went out with a surveyor to measure the bridges and discovered they are in fact taller than the warning signs tell drivers.

The problem trio of bridges were hit 62 times last year and feature in Network Rail’s top ten list of most struck bridges.

One of them caused lorries to get stuck on 31 separate occasions, earning it the title of Britain’s most hit bridge.

The Journal says the most likely causes of the continued problem are either Sat-Nav systems or ‘STOOPID’ lorry drivers.
