Good old-fashioned reporting spots story behind the story for two golden wedding couples

Herald reporter Graham Broach was asked to write up two golden wedding reports – and noticed the two couples were married in the same church, on the same day!

He checked out the details and then asked the couples if they would like to meet – 50 years after their back-to-back weddings in Plmyouth.

It was a case of great old-fashioned reporting turning a couple of everyday golden wedding reports into a superb story for The Herald.

The two couples had never met until the paper introduced them – but soon found they had a lot in common.

Rosemary and David Coombe and Gilbert and Barbara Crotty were married by the same vicar in the same church on the same day 50 years ago in back-to-back ceremonies just 90 minutes apart. And both couples have a son called Robert.

The newlyweds missed each other by moments at the gates of St Budeaux Parish Church on March 29, 1958.

But both sent in golden wedding anniversary reports which, by coincidence, ended up on the same eagle-eyed Herald reporter’s desk.

The chance was too good to miss, so Graham persuaded them to meet up for the first time at the church where they were married, bringing with them their favourite wedding photos.

Barbara said: “We had a chat and reminisced about the day and I said we should meet up again in ten years’ time.”

David added: “We got on well, but I really don’t remember them from 1958. We were so young and I was full of nerves, wondering if Rosemary would turn up. It certainly brought back some memories.”
