Free Press reporter takes double prize at annual awards ceremony

Keith MacKenzie of the West Highland Free Press has been named journalist of the year.

He also took reporter of the year at the Highland and Islands Media Awards while the Free Press was named newspaper of the year.

All but one of the winners in the annual award scheme were announced last month but the recipient of journalist of the year remained a mystery until Friday night’s ceremony, in Nairn.

Keith received his award and £500, which included a £300 charity donation, from Scottish transport minister Stewart Stevenson MSP.

The West Highland Free Press donated its £500 prize to the Skye and Lochalsh Young Carers Project.

Chatterbox, which won community newspaper of the year, has pledged £100 towards the Avoch Amenities Association.

The Press Ball raised £2,400 for four charities: Highland Society for Blind People, Highland Deaf Children’s Society, Age Concern Scotland and the Handy Person Scheme.
