Fast track journalism training course comes out on top

Sheffield College leads the list of the UK’s top ten industry-accredited journalism courses.

The latest figures, released by the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ), are based on the percentage of students eligible to sit the National Certificate Examination after completing the pre-entry course.

A total of 65 per cent of Sheffield College’s students on the 2007 fast track course passed the NCTJ’s preliminary exams with grade C or higher.

In second place was Nottingham Trent University’s Post-graduate Diploma in Newspaper Journalism with 55 per cent.

Three other university post-graduate courses also made the top ten – University of Salford (46 per cent), De Montfort University (35 per cent) and Cardiff University (35 per cent).

Four other fast-track courses also made the top ten – Cornwall College (50 per cent), Highbury College (38 per cent) Darlington College of Technology (33 per cent) and Liverpool Community College (33 per cent).

The 12-month part time course run by private London company noSWeat Journalism Training completed the list with 46 per cent.

Cardiff University students achieved the best shorthand results in the country with 88 per cent of students on the course achieving 100wpm.

These latest exam statistics cover the old handout and newspaper journalism exams as well as the new news writing and portfolio assessments with which they are being replaced.

NCTJ chief executive Joanne Butcher said: “Although the 2007 figures were clouded by the exam changeover, that should not be allowed to detract from the excellent results achieved by the top performing courses.

“Let’s hope their ability to turn out skilled, knowledgeable and highly-employable trainee journalists will serve to inspire others.”
