Evening News brings back glory days for football feature

Five of the greatest ever goals scored by Norwich City FC have been recreated by the Norwich Evening News.

The Archant daily brought back the players of yesteryear to the less glamorous surroundings of a park in the city to retrace those glory moments.

All five goals were captured on camera, and can now be seen on the Evening News website, with the stars playing themselves and the other players being represented by Evening News reporters in an array of different coloured shirts.

‘Canary from the Flames’ – a play on the famous Phoenix from the Flames segment on BBC show Fantasy Football – was held to mark the new football season and the launch of Archant’s annual Canary Preview magazine.

The goals featured were Darren Eadie’s strike in the 2-1 win over local rivals Ipswich in 1997, Neil Adams’s injury time winner against Leeds in 1994, Dave Stringer’s header against Watford at Vicarage Road in 1972 which secured the Division Two title and Darren Huckerby’s wonder run and strike against Birmingham last March.

But arguably the most memorable goal of all time for Norwich City was Jerry Goss’ volley against German legends Bayern Munich in their own stadium, in 1993.

It only took Goss a few takes to recreate that historic moment (above left) which was greeted by a spontaneous round of applause from the Evening News staff who were left floundering in his wake.

Also featured in the magazine is a reporter by Jonathan Redhead who went undercover to become a mascot for the day at Norwich’s ground Carrow Road in a £1,400 catsuit.
