Editors urged to take part in training survey

Time is running out for regional editors to respond to an online survey designed to help shape the future of journalism training.

The survey, reported on HoldtheFrontPage last month, aims to discover whether journalism training is meeting the needs of employers in the new multimedia environment.

The project is being managed by the National Council for the Training of Journalists with funding from Skillset, the skills council for the creative media industries. It also has the support of the Broadcast Journalism Training Council, the Periodicals Training Council and the Society of Editors.

Journalism employers in television, radio, national and regional newspapers, magazines or online are all being surveyed. Universities, further education colleges and private training providers running accredited journalism courses are also being asked to take part.

Paul Watson, who is managing the project for the NCTJ, said: “We have had an excellent response so far but I would encourage employers, editors and training providers to take part.

“The results will be used to shape and influence training and qualifications provision.”

The report will be published in early November and presented to the Society of Editors’ 2008 conference in Bristol and the NCTJ conference for heads of journalism in Salford.
