Death of former local newspaper executive

Former local newspaper executive Trevor Buckley has died following a long illness, aged 76.

He was formerly the editor-in-chief and director of the Guardian Series newspapers in Cheshire.

He started his career in journalism as an office boy at the Northwich Guardian ,in 1949, working his way to the top when he was appointed editor of the Warrington Guardian in 1971.

He served as editor until December 1983 and was the driving force behind many innovations.

After leaving the Guardian he set up Big Print, creating newspapers for the partially sighted.

Away from work, he was a keen sportsman and in his younger days was a qualified Football Association referee. He played squash and rugby and was also a champion sprinter.
