Deadline approaching for Plain English award

Time is running out for local newspapers wanting to enter the Plain English Campaign’s annual media awards.

The lobby group, established in 1979, hands out the gongs to newspapers it feels cut through the waffle to explain complex issues in a clear way to readers.

Previous winners include the Nottingham Evening Post, Liverpool Echo and last year’s champions, the Plymouth-based Western Morning News.

The judges praised the Northcliffe title for its well-designed layout and language which is easy to understand.

There are five other categories in the Campaign’s Media Awards and it also run prizes such as the Golden Bull award for the worst examples of written tripe.

The Plain English Campaign officially began in 1979 after founder Chrissie Maher OBE publicly shredded hundreds of official documents in Parliament Square, London. It has more than 11,000 members in 80 countries.
