Breakfast edition for The News as deadlines are abandoned for footy party

The News in Portsmouth printed a special breakfast edition to celebrate Pompey reaching the FA Cup final.

The south coast evening paper cut its deadlines so it could reach fans as early as possible in the wake of Pompey’s historic semi-final win.

The News sent an army of staff to cover the club’s journey into its first final since 1939.

Four sports reporters, four photographers and a reporter went to Wembley to follow fans on their big day out and cover the match.

It dedicated 18 pages to the victory over West Brom, along with a wrap-around picture of fans covering the front and back.

Scores of fans’ pictures inside and outside the stadium were also published and the following day The News also printed a 16-page special.

An early edition of Saturday’s Sports Mail was also printed so copies could be sold to fans as they came back from Wembley.

And video of fans inside and outside Wembley appeared on the paper’s website, www.portsmouth.co.uk.

Mark Waldron, editor of The News, said: “We wanted to get out onto the streets early today to reach the thousands of fans who are still on a high over Pompey’s victory.

“We have printed extra copies and are sure the fans will enjoy our unrivalled coverage.”
