Black armband tribute to journalist at Huddersfield Town cup tie

Huddersfield Town players last night wore black armbands in memory of journalist Adrian Sudbury at their League Cup match against Sheffield United.

They paid tribute to the achievements of the Examiner reporter in raising awareness of leukaemia and the bone marrow donation register run by the Anthony Nolan Trust.

In another gesture by the club, 50p from each matchday programme sold is being donated to the Trust, which runs one of the UK’s two bone marrow registers and matches leukaemia sufferers with donors.

Adrian died last week, after battling the disease for 18 months.

He had dedicated the last few months of his life to campaigning to get more people to sign up as bone marrow donors.

Huddersfield Town media manager Alisdair Straughan said: “Adrian was an inspiration to a great many people and the team is wearing black armbands out of respect for him and the work he did in raising the profile of donors for leukaemia sufferers through the Anthony Nolan Trust.

“Sudders’ quest to bring into the public eye the need for donors and raise greater awareness of the illness captured hearts and imaginations locally and nationally and if we can supplement what he did in any way that’s a positive thing.”

Huddersfield Town players also showed their support for Adrian’s campaign last month when they attended a clinic held at the Galpharm Stadium to encourage people to sign up to become bone marrow donors.
