Study on Saturday to become a journalist

The Media Training Centre is launching a part-time Saturday course designed for anyone who would like to enter journalism but cannot give up their current career while they re-train.

Based in London, the course will run over 30 weeks from January 2001, and for one week full-time in summer 2001.

The Media Training Centre says the unusual course will build on its reputation for providing courses for people who would otherwise be excluded from the journalism profession because they cannot afford the time to take a full-time course.

They promise that the course will be run in the same way, and to the same standard, as its full-time courses.

It will include a full range of realistic professional and computer training now needed by anyone wanting to freelance or enter journalism.

To get on to the course, applicants will need good written and spoken communication skills, and good educational qualifications are desirable, but your personal qualities are important too.

The course will lead to the NUJ-approved nationally-recognised Periodical Journalism NVQ Certificate, which is the standard pre-entry qualification for the magazine industry and is also recognised by the newspaper industry.

The course will cost £1,650, including £412.50 for each of the three terms and the summer school. Up to £250 of the main course fee, and up to 80 per cent of the summer school fee, may be funded by grant support and most, or all, of the remaining fee can be financed with a Career Development Loan spread over up to six years.

For more information on the course, required qualifications, or to arrange and appointment for an interview, ring the Media Training Centre on 01905 610678.
