Graduates add to their skills

Fourteen postgraduates have completed a 20-week NCTJ pilot course in magazine journalism at Harlow College.

The eight-element course included law, ethics and public affairs, shorthand, news writing, feature writing, subbing exams, production and design training, studying the industry and completing work experience.

Former Emap editor Ron Hunt, who now runs his own training and design consultancy, was the independent examiner, marker and assessor for the subbing exam and portfolio.

He said: “The standard of work was high and the design schemes for magazine dummies absolutely outstanding.

“These youngsters now have a well-rounded training background on which to build major careers in the magazine industry.”

He said their quick grasp of production technology and use of shorthand were valuable for the future.

“And it showed that large elements of the course would be relevant to newspaper as well as magazine journalists,” he said.
