50% pass journalism NCE exams- full list of successful candidates

The pass rate for the National Certificate Examination has remained stable at 50 per cent as 127 trainee journalists out of 254 won their stripes..

The overall pass rate for first-time takers of the exam slipped to 38 per cent, its lowest since October 2003.

Serious errors cost candidates valuable marks in the news report section of the exam, a section in which the pass rate dipped to 49 per cent.

But a new section, the Logbook, completed as coursework, gained a 96 per cent pass rate and helped the overall result.

The full list of journalists who passed their NCE is below.

To pass the NCE and qualify as senior reporters, journalists have to be successful in all four sections of news interview, news report, newspaper practice and logbook, and achieve an average of 60 per cent across all four sections.

The news interview exam was passed by 130 candidates, a pass rate of 66 per cent and 100 passed news report, a pass rate of 49 per cent. Newspaper practice had a 67 per cent pass rate.

Of the news interview section, the examiners’ report said: “Overall, markers were looking for stories that had a strongly-worded opening with good use of dynamic verbs and adjectives, a key quote used early followed by an organised, logical approach with a mix of accurate quotes and reported speech.

“Many candidates achieved this goal and candidates and their trainers and editors should be applauded for this.”

Of the news report: “It was disappointing to see the overall pass rate for the news report section drop to 49 per cent this time, but accuracy is paramount for a journalist and those candidates who made serious errors in their stories quite rightly lost valuable marks.”

Of newspaper practice: “There were a good number of excellent individual answers on many papers and a few outstanding candidates who achieved very good marks on all three questions they attempted.”
