Youngsters to supply "attitude"

The Gloucestershire Echo is appealing for journalists of the future to come forward to give the paper some ‘attitude’.

Editor Anita Syvret put an article in the newspaper asking teenagers to work on the paper once a month after school.

The youngsters will write columns and features for the newspaper’s Buzz section.

The single-page feature already has a team of young writers – but Anita is hoping to further raise the standard of writing.

She told HoldtheFrontPage: “We have young people working on the page at the moment but a lot of them just came along because their mates were doing it.

“We’re looking for people with attitude and spark. People with imagination and good ideas.”

Applicants have been asked to submit 200 words on a choice of three topics and Anita will pick the best 10 to come and work on the feature.

But the selection process may take longer than anticipated because the paper has already received 40 submissions.

The youngsters chosen will set their own agenda and write about whatever they feel is important to people their age.

Anita said: “It caters for a section of the public who don’t usually get a lot of attention.

“It’s good to have young people writing because if an adult writes it, it can just sound patronising.”
