Western wildlife wonder

A Millennium wildlife project in the westcountry is encouraging readers to do their bit for nature.

More than 150 nestboxes for birds have been handed out by the Western Morning News, on land its readers have turned into their own wildlife havens.

Wildlife writer Trevor Beer estimated that hundreds of young had successfully hatched and fledged from the boxes.

He told readers: “The first nestbox results, collated from 70 boxes, are that no fewer than 485 birds have fledged.”

The survey showed blue tits the main inhabitants, raising 238 young from 34 boxes.

The bird boxes are just one part of the Western Morning News Millennium Wildlife Project, which has seen readers involved in a number of initiatives run by the Plymouth-based paper.

Trevor added: “Every week beings letters and telephone calls from other readers keen to join the project and set some of their land aside to help all forms of wildlife thrive.”
