Western Daily Press readers to decide the way forward

The Western Daily Press is about to find out what its readers think of the paper – through a massive survey.

It asks about the readers themselves, their likes and dislikes, what people think about the layout, design and content of the paper, as well as the news coverage.

More specialised questions on the Daily Press supplements follow, and there is a section on the kind of improvements readers would like to see.

The Western Daily Press has a 52,000 circulation and a readership of around three times that figure.

The survey has been carefully put together to allow for any distortion in the answers caused by the proportion of readers who fail to send back the form, which was printed in the paper every day last week.

There is a lure for readers to fill the 35-question form – the chance to win a £1,000 cash prize and a variety of Marks and Spencer vouchers.

Editor Ian Beales told his readers: “It will tell us what you would like to see more of in your Western Daily Press – and what you would rather do without.

“And because we are a newspaper which listens to its readers, we will respond to that as we evolve the Western Daily Press over the coming months.”

He told HoldTheFrontPage: “We’ll know within a few days what the take-up has been from our readers.

“We’ve done focus groups before and some other forms of research but this is the first time we’ve gone down this route of asking our readers.

“We are asking people what they like so we know where we can tweak the newspaper and it is something we can put into practice.”
