Welsh journalist David dies

Former Western Mail journalist David Hewitt has died, aged 70.

He began his journalism career at the Carmarthen Journal, before joining the Western Mail and South Wales Echo as a staff reporter in the early 1950s.

He later became the Mail’s athletics correspondent, and covered The Empire Games in Cardiff in 1958.

In the early 1960s he returned to Carmarthen as editor of the newly-launched Carmarthen Times, returning to the Western Mail a few years later to cover the West Wales area.

For many years he led the newspaper’s reporting team at the National Eisteddfod, retiring 10 years ago.

His funeral took place on Monday.
