Weekly targets 'ignored' Portuguese community

An innovative idea to help integrate two communities has been launched by a weekly newspaper in Lincolnshire.

The Boston Standard has launched a dedicated news service aimed at the town’s growing Portuguese community, which will appear in the paper once a month.

The borough of Boston has a population of 58,000, and 5,000 of these are from Portugal.

Editor Julia Ogden (pictured) said that the Portuguese community had previously felt ignored, and the first set of special news stories, which appeared in the paper this week, had been well received.

She said: “The Portuguese community in particular are delighted with it.

“We’d spoken to a few leading figures from the community beforehand and they said they thought it would be good but they didn’t realise it would be this good!”

Once a month several pages will now include articles, written in English and Portuguese, aimed at the new audience.
