"Vital role will expand" – incoming president

The incoming president of the Newspaper Society has vowed to build on the organisation’s vital role for the industry.

Tim Bowdler (right), chief executive of Johnston Press, will take over as president on July 1.

At the NS annual meeting yesterday he said he would focus on maintaining the Society’s position as a leading trade association in the UK and Europe.

And other important topics would include:

  • Protecting press freedom and the citizen’s right to know;
  • Emphasising the unique editorial strengths, independence and diversity of regional and local newspapers;
  • Building on the success of AdFast, an internet-based artwork transmission system for advertising;
  • Promoting the results of the £250,000 research project into the effectiveness of regional press advertising;
  • Ensuring the NS operates in a cost-effective manner and reflects the needs of the membership.

    During his presidency, the Society will be lobbying hard on the Communications Bill to ensure the future structure of media ownership and content regulation worked for the benefit of the industry, readers and advertisers alike.

    He said: “We also need to help the regulators to develop a better understanding of our industry so that their decisions are based on a proper appreciation of the competitive environment in which we operate,” he said.

    “The Newspaper Society plays a vital role in numerous aspects of our industry.

    “I am sure that the year will bring other challenges and I look forward to playing my part in addressing those to the benefit of the Society and its members as a whole.”

  • Tim Bowdler succeeds Edwin Boorman, chairman of the KM Group, who was president for the year from July 2001. A new president is elected from the membership every year.

    Tim has been chief executive since September 1997, joining Johnston Press in 1994 as group managing director designate, becoming group managing director later that year.
