Video first for Argus as county cricket club celebrates

A County Championship win for Sussex cricket club gave The Argus the opportunity to launch its video news service.

The club has won the Championship for only the second time in its 169 year history – making them double trophy winners after scooping the C&G Trophy at Lord’s last month.

And to mark the achievement The Argus went to town with its coverage, with three eight-page souvenir supplements and a video report of an open-top bus parade by the team, as well as a host of other in-paper features.

Sussex wrapped up the Championship after beating Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge on Friday, and a back page lead and a spread followed in The Argus on Saturday.

There was further coverage in Sunday’s football paper and on Monday, and an eight-page souvenir pull-out – with interviews with key players, a run-down of the season and match-by-match analysis – was published on Tuesday.

All the reports were put together by Argus cricket writer Bruce Talbot, who has covered the county’s fortunes since 1994.

This was rounded-off with a video report by news reporters Miles Godfrey and Andy Dickenson, who travelled with the team on the open-top bus and filmed interviews with some of the team as well as capturing images of the crowds below.

The pair had earlier undergone an intensive Newsquest video journalism training course, and it was the first time their footage had been uploaded to www.theargus.co.uk.

The extensive coverage followed hot on the heels of Sussex’s C&G Trophy win, which saw them claim victory over Lancashire, with The Argus publishing previews and features in the week building up to the big game.

Two days before the match, an eight-page preview pull-out was published, and on matchday itself the Sports Argus was on sale at Brighton Station and other city centre outlets in the evening as celebrating fans returned from the final.

Another five pages of reaction and comment followed in Monday’s edition, and on Tuesday an eight-page picture special pullout, which included a page of photos sent in by readers, was produced focussing on the thousands of Sussex supporters who attended the match.
