Unusual round-up of suspects

A gallery of security camera video stills is being published on the pages of a weekly newspaper series to help bring suspects to book.

The Kent and Sussex Courier and Sevenoaks Chronicle are working together with the district councils and the police on the project.

They intend to feature suspects wanted in connection with shoplifting, disorderly behaviour and credit card fraud offences.

The gallery of film stills will be seen by an estimated 200,000 people who could help the police put names to faces.

The first six were shown promiently across two pages of this week’s paper, captured by town centre cameras in Sevenoaks, Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge and Edenbridge. The £750,000 Tunbridge Wells system is controlled from the local town hall. A similar one at Sevenoaks has cost some £1.5m to date.

There will now be a weekly round-up of suspects.

Pc Peter Hay told readers: “CCTV is clearly working and in time, with the public’s help, It will work more as a deterrent and for catching people.

“I think printing the pictures in the paper will be very effective. Readers can phone the case officer if they recognise anything.”
