    There are a thousand ways to be a journalist in today’s market, with the growth of new technologies fuelling an already vibrant and varied industry.

    An education in journalism will equip you to work on national or local newspapers and to pursue your special interests through magazine or online writing. World peace, wind-surfing, surfing the net – the range of publications out there is astonishing and growing by the day.

    The Print Journalism field delivers industry standard education to students planning to enter journalism as a profession. Our course is staffed by industry professionals, and it equips you to write effectively across a range of styles and genres.

    It will give you a detailed understanding of the media in practical and intellectual terms; everything from the nuts and bolts of newspaper production to the thorny issues of bias, ethical responsibility, local and national government and news agendas.

    You should expect the working environment to be lively, argumentative, critical and demanding. You will go out into the community to look for stories, as well as developing your skills and abilities in-house, in seminars and newsday exercises.

    You’ll be producing your own newspapers, magazines and websites during the course – as a reporter, an editor or designer, and always as a part of a team.

    By the end of the course you will have a portfolio of work to show employers.

    The focus is on producing well-rounded industry professionals who can work to deadlines both as individuals and as part of a team.

    BA Hons Broadcast Journalism


    This programme aims to provide you with the communication skills and practical knowledge that are important in most occupations, but which are invaluable if you’re looking for a job in the competitive world of TV, radio and online broadcasting.

    Broadcast Journalism is for students who want to write, report and create news programmes, who have talent and creative flair as well as intellectual ability.

    It’s for you if you want to learn not only how to analyse and write perceptively about issues surrounding journalism, but also want to become an accomplished broadcast journalist; able to edit, shoot, write and voice your own reports and programmes.

    At the centre of this course is a fully equipped newsroom with agency feeds of 24-hour news, powerful computers for editing and the latest digital cameras and audio recorders for news gathering. You’ll produce whole programmes in the campus TV and radio studios and work individually on longer, documentary-style reports.

    A special feature of the course is our Newsdays, when you’ll experience the excitement and pressure of rolling live broadcasts.

    You’ll organise an editorial and production team working to tight deadlines on live programmes producing hourly radio, TV and online material and be given the opportunity to shoot video, record pieces-to-camera and present reports.

    Television and radio may be the main focus of study, but you can also learn how to create and service internet news sites, finding out how to blend sound and images using presentation skills that have their roots in broadcasting techniques.

    All students will have the opportunity to carry out at least two work placements, which are assessed as part of their degree. The contacts made during these placements can provide the foundation for a future career.

    The course is taught by industry professionals and has been developed in co-operation with local and national radio and TV stations.

    Full-Time Entry Requirements

  • Normally three A levels: English, Politics, Law, History and Media Studies provide a good background.

    BA Hons Photojournalism


    Do you want to use your camera to capture and comment upon the world that surrounds you? You could join the photojournalists and documentary photographers who use their cameras to define our world and share its experiences.

    This new degree programme aims to equip you with the practical skills, and support for your individual development, to enable you to become a multi-skilled, adaptable and confident photographer.

    The structure and content of the programme will encourage you to develop an individual style and acquire skills appropriate to achieving your career objectives. You will develop your ability to recognise good images and to communicate effectively through images.

    Practical and theoretical studies will help you develop an informed appreciation of the work of individual photographers and the power of photography to provide insight and to persuade.

    You will explore the role of images in the reporting of news, the ways in which they are edited and their alliance with the written word. You will also have the opportunity to undertake valuable work experience within this exciting industry.

    At the end of the programme you should be able to work independently, utilising film and digital technology appropriately, to meet the variety of situations encountered in professional practice, to produce iconic news images, portraits, reportage and photo essays.

    The programme aims to prepare you for a wide range of career opportunities in the competit
    ive fields of photography and the media. You may plan to freelance or be employed on newspapers, magazines, news or sports agencies.

    You may be aiming to meet the demand for ‘realist’ photography in fashion, advertising, corporate and general PR, or documentary work may lead you into publishing or exhibiting.

    BA Hons Publishing


    Would you like to work with books, magazines and up-to-the-minute multi-media publishing? This could mean anything from ‘Harry Potter’ to ‘Hello’ or ‘Kerrang’, or maybe electronic travel guides downloadable to your iPod.

    Contemporary publishing is an exciting dynamic global industry, forever changing to keep pace with developments in technology and consumer demands. It offers many different career options.

    Cheltenham is an appropriate place to study publishing, and this course has been developed with the involvement of industry professionals to be as relevant as possible.

    Cheltenham is also home to the best literary festival in the country and you will have the opportunity to be involved as a volunteer which will give you the chance to hear famous authors talk about their books and possibly to meet them.

    To publish is to make publicly known, (OED), and today there are more ways than ever to do this. As a student on this course you will come to understand how projects as varied as books and online or interactive materials are developed and produced, beginning from the moment that the publisher has an idea. New developments in the industry will be incorporated into your studies as they occur.

    This course will also encourage a critically reflective understanding of the broader media, cultural and information industries and their markets, while equipping you with practical transferable professional skills.

    The course begins with a practical and conceptual introduction to the nature and structure of publishing as well as its historical background. You will then engage with all aspects of the business from the research, development and marketing; scheduling, commissioning text development, design and layout to editing, production process and distribution.

    In year one there are two skills modules which cover the basics of editorial and design.

    In year two there are intermediate modules on editorial and design and deeper emphasis on project development, list management, law and ethics, use and types of illustration, professional writing and customers and cultures. During year two you will be asked to consider an area of publishing upon which you would like to focus.

    In year three you will specialise in your chosen field of publishing and will complete a dissertation while undertaking advanced study of editorial, design and state of the art technology as used currently in the industry.

    Our advisory board is made up of publishing professionals from world class companies to ensure that we are up-to-date with the latest trends in the industry and many of them will visit from time to time.

    This degree offers you a firm foundation for a working life in publishing while also offering challenging intellectual opportunities.

    BA Hons Public Relations

    As a public relations practitioner you will have amazing career choices where every day promises to be exciting and challenging.

    You could be organising top-level celebrities to promote an exotic resort; working with the World Health Organisation to communicate disease-prevention in Africa; briefing business leaders on an international company merger; travelling the world launching new IT which delivers breakthrough communications; lobbying the government to change regulations on behalf of your client; or running international sponsorships at the next Olympics.

    You will be working with the media, often appearing in the media yourself and certainly training others to do so; travelling, nationally and internationally, developing high-profile contacts, including celebrities, politicians, business icons and academics.

    You will benefit from our high-level professional contacts and academic expertise keeping you informed of the very latest public relations trends as well as offering you rich experiences and strong global and local career opportunities.

    In year one you will study modules on marketing, advertising, communications, sponsorship and events; the strategic role public relations plays in national and international business; the latest media structure and operations with their legal and ethical issues as well as engage in practical visual, writing and business communications.

    You will have plenty of current case studies to keep you up-to-date and you will have many opportunities to participate in actual public relations activities and debate issues with guest speakers from the industry.

    In year two you will explore the public relations political, organisational, regulatory and business frameworks, along with contemporary social and international issues.

    In addition, you will be developing your creativity through existing public relations programmes and a wide range of media production opportunities in
    our own studios using the latest communications technology.

    Year three offers you the opportunity of a one-year paid work placement where you develop your vocational abilities, yet have tutorial support and chances to meet and discuss experiences with your fellow students.

    You will return to university in year four to study the essential corporate reputation management module and gain understanding of handling crises and issues.

    You will develop your own campaign portfolio which bridges academic and professional life and you can choose several public relations sectors in which to specialise and therefore prepare you for your career choice.

    The biggest agency in the world, WeberShandwick is behind our degree with their UK CEO as guest lecturer and course adviser. Other strong professional links include the recent President of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR), along with leaders of other high-profile PR companies who are offering seminars and opportunities for students to have regular hands-on experience.

    Our Visiting Fellow is the UK’s PR guru, Lord Chadlington, who created the largest independent public relations consultancy in the world and has now gone on to develop another conglomerate of PR companies.
