The best job in town

The catchphrase of a former reporter and sub on the Burton Mail has been immortalised in the newsroom.

A plaque bearing the words “We’ve got the best job in town” has been unveiled to mark the first anniversary of the death of Richard Wood.

Dickie, as he was known to his many friends, died after being struck by a train on the main Derby to Birmingham railway line.

He always believed he had the best job in town – and it’s his favourite saying that his sister Pat Hunt unveiled in his memory.

She also presented a cheque, collected in lieu of Christmas cards by his workmates, to Marion Hemmerdinger, co-ordinator of the Burton branch of the mental health charity, MIND.

Richard was a popular and well-loved figure who lived for his work. He had fallen victim to clinical depression before his death at 49.

He had worked at the paper for 34 years, as a linotype operator, reporter and sub-editor.

His well-worn phrase was mentioned in the eulogy at his funeral, which was attended by 200 mourners – a mark of his popularity.
